Pod casts: General (3 examples with links)

Young turks –  http://www.theyoungturks.com/

This is my favourite non fictional podcast which I have been watching for the past four years. I don’t take them as a role model for my possible future career entirely as their area of work is journalism. However I deem them worthy of note because they have taken their podcast and made it into a platform for boosting their own careers; something I would also like to do in my life.

Cenk Uyger, the host of the show, for example while being the host of the show is also a full time political blogger and had been a commentator for political discussions on television.

StarshipSofa – http://www.starshipsofa.com/

Before I came across this website, I had never actually heard of such a thing as a “science fiction audio magazine”. The idea intrigues me. If I can organize something similar for my future works I can get it to become a lot more user interactive; along with providing an issue by issue framework around which such work can be structures and dispensed.

If I do this, it will take some time and consideration in how to set it up and to make it a possible professional career choice.

Radio Drama Revival – http://www.radiodramarevival.com/

I chose this site to mention because it is the personal career site for Fred Greenhalgh, whose story is briefly summarized on this website and matches my own to some degree. If I am honest I will admit that I was slightly worried, not knowing precisely where my choice of career would take me but after reading his example I feel more assured that it can be done.

The merits of the site itself are that any submitted audios are story centric, meaning that they resvolve around a strong narrative. I could not agree more with this sentiment and have been deeply frustrated by some of my previous tasks in university when I was told to ‘think outside the narrative’. My own logic told me that if you don’t have a narrative then you don’t have a story and if you don’t have a story, then all you’re doing is filming stuff randomly.

Out of all the websites I’ve viewed I like this model far better then the others and will most likely be submitting one or more of the audios to this website for display sometime in the future.

    eggman,

Thanks so much for taking the time to highlight my site/story – glad to hear that it’s been an inspiration.

It was only four years ago when I was wandering around the streets of New Orleans with a backpack stuffed with microphones trying to figure out how the hell you record a radio drama.

But, you keep at it, work on your craft, and set your sights high and amazing things can happen! I will say right now that “All I know is that I know nothing” and the more I learn about writing, production, direction, engineering, sound effects, music, post-production and marketing… well, the more I learn what I don’t know 🙂

I’m working on now on two new original works which I’m excited to release – as my first new material since being featured in the WSJ.

Thanks again, and I do hope you send me some material to listen to!

thanks for commenting. I have indeed send you the audio I was developing and I hope you will like it enough to host more once I finished producing them.
